About The Eagle's Nest

The Eagle's Nest has been published at Rhea County High School since 1996. Our print version was produced by JS Printing, who did a fine job. In 2009, The Eagle's Nest moved exclusively to the web. Our site is hosted by Surpass Hosting.

Web site details

The Eagle's Nest web site is published with WordPress, using a custom theme. Our headlines are set in Prenton Condensed, from TypeKit.

WordPress plugins we couldn't live without:
Akismet
Of course!
Advanced Custom Fields
Allows the addition of custom field data to posts. We make heavy use of this to add extra data to posts—everything from source links for Around the Web articles to ASIN numbers for book and CD reviews. This basically makes our site possible!
Better Tag Cloud
Creates the tag cloud on the Around the Web Archive page.
Lightbox 2
Handles display of enlarged pictures in individual article posts.
Custom Post Type Archives
Allows separate templates for Reviews, School & Community posts, etc.
Role Manager
On the back-end, allows very specific customization of specific user privileges.
Contact Form 7
Handles our Contact page, as well as other special forms, sometimes.
Edit Flow
Adds a host of collaboration features to the WordPress back-end.
WP-Polls
Manages our front-page polls.
WP Grins Lite
Clickable smilies for comments.
Google Calendar Events
Displays our Google Calendar data on the front page sidebar.
Photo management The Picture of the Day and other photo slideshow galleries are handled by Dominey Design's SlideShowPro Flash Component (for creating the slideshow "plugs" for the different pages) and SlideShowPro Director (for managing photos and creating the slideshow content). These tools are amazingly affordable, provide professional results, and are unbelievable easy to use! Promotion banners Our "ad" banners are managed with the free, open-source OpenX Ad Server. Currently, we're using it to manage banners related to school events, public service announcements, and experimenting with select advertisers.
